Little Red Riding Hood

The classic fairytale with a surprise ending,
set to the fiery String Quartet No. 11 in F Minor, Op. 95, “Serioso”
by Ludwig van Beethoven
Julie Freedman Smith narrates and sings this version of Little Red Riding Hood by Liza Scriggins with Beethoven’s epic String Quartet Op. 95. Performed in February 2023 to a sold-out audience at the Calgary Central Library Performance Hall, in collaboration with Kensington Sinfonia and Green Fools Theatre, thanks to grants from Calgary Foundation, the Grayson and Dorothy Morrison Flow Through Fund, and the Alberta Foundation for the Arts. This story was first available by video in 2021-2022 as a Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra Education Concert, with artwork by Olga Cuttell. (Please note: the painting above is by Swedish artist Carl Larsson, 1881. Olga Cuttell’s creations were only available through the Calgary Philharmonic, who commissioned her for that particular project.) Also performed in October 2022 in Canmore at Creekside Hall, and in June 2023 at cSPACE King Edward for Calgary Instrumental Society, plus at several Calgary schools in Winter 2024 and Spring 2025.

Julie Freedman Smith narrates this original story written by Liza Scriggins, with violinist Diane Lane, violist Liza Scriggins, cellist Andrea Case, and artwork by Olga Cuttell of Oladesign. Most recently performed with Mount Royal University Conservatory’s Arioso and Arietta Choirs in May 2023 at Bella Concert Hall, as well as in June 2023 at cSPACE King Edward with Instrumental Society of Calgary.
